Guild of the Week: Awoken Myth (MYTH)

Awoken Myth [MYTH] was formed in October of 2004 during the Guild Wars World Preview Event. Founding members had met previously in various MMO games, and Guild Wars was seen as the perfect opportunity for them to start their own guild. Awoken Myth is a guild focused on Player-vs-Player combat, however they also have a closely allied guild named Forgotten Myth that caters to players who prefer cooperative gaming, or are new to Guild Wars.

All of MYTH's fifteen current members are Slovenian, though the guild is looking to expand their membership beyond Slovenia. Several of their members know each other outside of gaming, and this has resulted in a tightly woven group of players who enjoy gaming together and competing in PvP. Awoken Myth is currently taking part in the Electronic Sports League Guild Wars Opening Cup.

Awoken Myth primarily plays in Guild-vs-Guild matches. The Team Arena is commonly used to test new combinations of skills and professions, before moving into the Tomb of the Primeval Kings for more advanced testing. The Tombs maps are also used as a place for guild teams to relax, using builds made on the spot.

Strategy: PvP Play

Like many guilds, battle strategy for Awoken Myth starts with using voice chat. They view this as an essential means of improving their response time. The team strategist selects targets based on either priority or opportunities presented to them by the enemy team’s or player’s mistakes. They also take the time to practice with a build before committing to Guild matches to make sure everything is ready.

While in battle Awoken Myth will first test the response time and effectiveness of the enemy’s Monks. To do this, MYTH members selects a target and will attack without employing their full damage potential. If the enemy’s Monks do not react quickly, or if their reaction is sub-standard, then the team will take the opportunity and attempt to kill the target. When the enemy response is effective, however, MYTH will promptly switch their target, and then a short while afterwards they will switch again; this final switch may be to a third target or back to the original target.

While the effectiveness of the enemy’s Monks is being assessed, MYTH members will also be analyzing their opponents' offensive and defensive strategies. This will enable the team to select the priority targets. For example, if an enemy team is using Air Elementalists to deal fast damage, MYTH will attempt to reduce their offensive potential by killing or neutralizing the Elementalists.

If a battle goes badly for Awoken Myth, they are always prepared to retreat. It is usually better for any players remaining alive to retreat from battle and not gain Death Penalty, and then regroup with their resurrected allies. They can then push forward again with a counter attack.

Any guild that faces Awoken Myth should be wary of MYTH players' awareness of battlefield positioning. In one recent battle on the Isle of the Dead map, MYTH was able to make their opponents pay for bad positioning. MYTH members spotted that the entire enemy team had waded into the tar – which slows movement – around the flag stand on the map. Then MYTH’s strategist made a quick decision to run past their enemy and rush the Guild Lord. The enemy guild responded quickly, but was late by seconds as a result of being forced to wade out of the tar.

Example Team Build

  1. Warrior/Elementalist – Hammer skills and Ward Against Foes.

  2. Ranger – Skills that cause the Poisoned condition and trap skills.

  3. Mesmer – Illusion skills that cause damage over time and Signet of Humility.

  4. Mesmer/Monk – Energy denial skills with Life Bond to help protect the other Monks.

  5. Necromancer/Monk – Skills that cause the Diseased condition, Putrid Explosion, Suffering and Martyr.

  6. Healing Monk – Healing build with Heal Party included.

  7. Healing/Protection Monks (two) – Two Monks that include Protective Spirit.

The general aim of the build is to overload the enemy’s team with skills that cause damage over time. The two Mesmers will watch the enemy’s Monks to see if any of them are using Martyr; if a Monk using Martyr is found, the Warrior and Mesmer will then focus their efforts on killing this target. The Mesmer/Monk is tasked with draining the energy and reducing the healing capacity of any other enemy Monks. The Warrior's Ward Against Foes skill is used to impede the mobility of the enemy.
