Interview: European Regional Runner-up - Lamers Ultimate Majority
ArenaNet: Who in your guild designs the team builds you use, or is it a group effort?
Lamers Ultimate Majority: Definitely a group effort. We have a few people in the guild who come up with the ideas. After someone has an idea which everyone likes, we discuss its pros and cons, and eventually create a build out of it. After that, we develop or drop the build based on our gameplay experience.
AN: How much time do you guys spend practicing together?
LuM: To be honest, we hardly ever practice. We just gather together in the Guild Hall and play to have some fun. If that is counted as practice, we try to play a few hours always when we can field a team. Only few days before playoffs we wanted to gather a team which is allowed to play at WCCG.
AN: Does the guild usually use the same core players for all of its competitive matches, or do you switch out often?
LuM: Of course it would be very efficient to always use core players, but we all have school and work--even other online games—to concentrate on. We've got quite a large group of players and yet we still find it hard to gather eight players for some evening GvG.
AN: Is there anything special you do to prepare for a big event like the Regional Playoffs?
LuM: Not really, except we had the chance to play unrated matches versus a few top guilds. We wish we would have had more time to play together prior the event to strengthen our team play.
AN: What guild do you think is your biggest competitor heading into the World Championships in Taipei?
LuM: We are going to Taipei as underdogs, and facing every guild will be a tough challenge. But if we have to name one, War Machine has definitely impressed most so far.
AN: What guild's performance has surprised/impressed you the most during the Regional Playoffs?
LuM: The Valandor has been impressive with their tactics, experience and ability to read the game. I must also say we surprised ourselves by winning against EW.
AN: What was the guild's philosophy behind choosing the builds that they have run so far?
LuM: To be efficient but keep it simple.
AN: Did you choose your build to play to your team's strength, or what you felt was your foe's weakness?
LuM: We always play a build we feel comfortable with and adjust it a bit based on the expectations of what we are going to face, or try out something no one expects from us.
AN: Which match do you feel was the most interesting/challenging for your guild?
LuM: So far the last game versus Esoteric Warriors. Taipei tripped on a mistake, and we had the chance to prove to all in a fair match that we didn't win the game just because of EW's bad luck.
AN: What has been the "highlight" moment for your team?
LuM: Winning the last match versus Esoteric Warriors.
AN: What is the one mistake you see other guilds make the most?
LuM: Underestimating the importance of controlling the flag stand.
AN: Do you see a different play style between guilds from different regions of the world?
LuM: Yes. Korean guilds tend to read the game better and use their strengths to their advantage, whereas Western style of play relies more on coordinated attacks. We see it changing all time towards a more similar style, because EP isn't the metagame anymore!
AN: What skill(s) do you thing are underused by other guilds and why?
LuM: Lots of guilds are too afraid to try out something new which they haven't seen anyone use before. I honestly think people should try to find nice combinations by themselves and not only Google GW scene forums to copy a cookie-cutter build for themselves. For example, Warrior tactics line and Elementalist water magic line have many underused skills which have a lot of potential.
